Rail service on a key southern line resumes Monday following a two-month suspension, though passengers are advised to prepare for another full closure in early November as part of a major infrastructure project.
Train services on the Bettembourg-Luxembourg City line are resuming on Monday, 15 September, following a complete two-month shutdown for major engineering works. The resumption of service will end the bus replacement services that had added significant time to commutes for passengers travelling to Esch-sur-Alzette and Thionville/Metz.
This return to normalcy, however, will be brief. The Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) has announced another full suspension of traffic on the same line during the All-Saints holiday period, from 1-10 November. This will reinstate rail replacement bus services for cross-border workers from France and commuters to the south.
The recent summer closure facilitated critical work on new tracks between Bettembourg and Luxembourg City, a key part of the ongoing, rapid development of the country's railway infrastructure. This project is part of a larger modernisation effort that requires periodic full line closures to accelerate construction.
The CFL plans to bring the upgraded line into service in 2027, a timeline that anticipates another major closure during a future summer period to complete the necessary work.
