Findel airport is set to receive massive investment for improvements and renovations over the coming years.

The Minister of Mobility, Yuriko Backes, confirmed around a billion euros would be invested in the airport's improvement by 2032. Around 800 million of this would be financed by lux-Airport, the company managing Findel, while the government would make up the remaining 200 million to ensure safety, security, air navigation, customs clearance and fire and rescue services.

In response to a parliamentary question posed by CSV MP Laurent Mosar, Backes said air traffic is expected to undergo a considerable increase over the coming years, which would mean Findel in its current state would reach its limits by 2050. Since the site cannot be expanded, nor can a second runway be constructed, the airport would need to undergo improvement works.

These renovations could, however, take up to 20 years, Backes specified, as the plans will focus on infrastructure such as buildings and runway surfaces. The minister did not supply details on when the decision would be made regarding a new airport, nor when feasibility studies will be launched.
