While Dudelange, Beaufort, and Vianden all have their own open-air swimming pool that draws plenty of visitors in the summer for a cool dip and a bit of sport, the capital has yet to build one of its own despite being home to a large portion of the country's population.

That said, plans for an open-air swimming pool in Luxembourg City are becoming more and more concrete: The capital could get its first outdoor pool in the years ahead, with the project at Kockelscheuer firming up.

First study already completed

The idea of an open-air pool next to the football stadium at the Cloche d'Or end of the site has been on the table for years. Now, though, the plans look set to become concrete. The new pool is to be built between the campsite and the sports hall.

The reason the project had not progressed further until now, according to Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer, was that until recently not all of the land required for the build had been acquired.

That hurdle, the mayor explained, has now been cleared, and the project is in its planning phase. Three firms have been asked to put forward proposals and a feasibility study setting out how and where exactly to lay out the pool, including its various components, both a sporting element and a leisure element for children. She added that she hoped a decision could be taken before the summer.

The Luxembourg City municipal council first submitted the project to the Ministry of the Environment back in 2020. A first study has already been completed, and another is due to be launched this spring.

The study, Polfer said, would also look at the biotopes and at how the local animals and plant life react over the course of the year, with the pledge that the project will be as sustainable as possible. The cost will then have to be put to the municipal council, which will need to give its agreement.

A specific start date for the works has not yet been announced. The mayor's hope, for now, is that construction could begin in the middle of next year.
