Since 1998, children have been boarding a traditional steam train in Pétange to be greeted by St Nicholas in Minett Park Fond-de-Gras.

They stand there, eagerly waiting Kleeschen, otherwise known as St. Nicholas, and the Houseker, St Nicholas' loyal companion who swaps candy for sticks if children misbehave. Anticipation is high to finally see the man with the red, pointed hat, and white beard. The locomotive is ready with white steam in the air.

Most of the children already know exactly what they want this year to avoid any possible confusion. Amongst the wishes were an excavator toy truck, a football uniform, a Unicorn Academy doll, a Playmobile circus, and even a remote-controlled car.

Olivier Broy, stationmaster at the railway museum, expresses his delight at seeing St Nicholas and the Houseker fascinate the children. "Of course, it's great to see how enthusiastic they get about steam trains. It makes our work as volunteers feel valued."

Watch the original report in Luxembourgish:

After being greeted by St Nicholas on the platform, the children are given a little something to eat before he confirms that the majority of the children behaved themselves this year. Good news - otherwise there wouldn't be any goody bags.

St Nicholas himself has some tips: "It's best to always listen to your parents. And always tidy up your room, otherwise Houseker will have to collect the toys."

The conditions for 6 December seem ideal. And who knows, with a bit of luck there might even be a bit of snow so that the kids can really enjoy the day off from school.
