The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the extension of the Luxembourg City tram network to Kirchberg and Hollerich on Thursday. The total cost for the two future extensions is estimated at €135 million.
The extensions will connect the Pont Grand-duchesse Charlotte-Pfaffenthal and Laangfur (Kirchberg) stations, as well as the Gare and Hollerich stations. These extensions encompass the necessary infrastructure construction, environmental compensation measures, and associated studies.
This new legislative project marks "a significant milestone on multiple fronts," highlighted the Ministry of Mobility.
Against the backdrop of a crisis in certain sectors of the construction industry, the Ministry emphasised the importance of pursuing essential and impactful projects as a public contracting authority. The Ministry assured that the majority of public investment would support companies based in Luxembourg.
The tramway extensions align with development plans for the Kirchberg Plateau and Porte de Hollerich, in conjunction with the new K2 and HO neighbourhoods.
Extension from central railway station to Hollerich
The tram line extension (HO line) will be constructed in two stages. The first stage (A), set to enter service in 2028, will branch off from the existing line after the central railway station. It will serve the future "Nei Hollerich" neighbourhood and its Hollerich interchange.
Covering a distance of 1.1 km with two tracks, this phase will feature two new stations, tram platforms, and all necessary tram systems and equipment, including overhead power supply. The estimated cost for this extension is €29 million.
At a later stage, this branch will be further extended to the forthcoming "Porte de Hollerich" neighbourhood and the Bouillon P&R.
Extension to "Laangfur" neighbourhood in Kirchberg
The expansion of Line K2 will also occur in two phases. The initial double-track phase (Phase A) spans 2.3 km and includes three new stations. This phase will diverge from the existing line near the Pont Grand-duchesse Charlotte-Pfaffenthal station to connect with the future Laangfur mixed-use neighbourhood.
Scheduled to start in 2025 and expected to be operational by 2027, this phase will necessitate a comprehensive redesign of public space to accommodate the tramway. The estimated cost for this extension is €106 million.
In the subsequent phase, the tramline will extend to the future "Kuebebierg" neighbourhood before traversing Boulevard Pierre Frieden to reach the Luxexpo interchange.
