Whether it's sushi, burgers, or pasta, everyone has their own opinion on where to best indulge in Luxembourg's culinary scene.

The hamburger is the undisputed icon among the wide range of fast-food snacks now on offer. Be it from a drive-in, at a village fair, a sporting event next to a Mettwurst and Thüri – pardon, Grillwurst – or simply at home in the garden on the barbecue, the burger found its way into our food culture many years ago and is now known, loved, and indispensable among young and old all over the world. Quick to make, simple and tasty.

To describe the hamburger dismissively as just fast food, however, would not do this classic justice. It has long found its place in restaurants and even fine dining. These days, it's more than just a piece of minced meat between two halves of a bun. Over the years, a true culture has developed around the hamburger, one as diverse as the answers to the question of where it even comes from. Who invented it?

The burger's long history seems certain, but its exact origins remain unclear. Possible birth dates vary, though it likely first appeared in the early 19th century. While the term does not derive from the English 'ham', it is believed to come from 'hamburger steak', meaning fried minced meat. Immigrants from Hamburg to the United States are said to have brought the recipe with them from Germany.

Other theories claim the term originated in 1885 at a fair near the US city of Hamburg, while another points to an American cookbook from 1842, where the dish was described as "steak prepared in the Hamburg style". Some even cite older cookbooks that feature a similar version of the hamburger we know today.

Over the decades, the burger has evolved from a simple snack into an international success. Today, countless variations, combinations and levels of quality exist: with lettuce, tomato, gherkin, cheese, egg, sauce, chilli, rösti, or as a chicken, fish, vegetarian, or vegan burger – the possibilities are endless.

Creativity knows no bounds when it comes to this dish, which may explain why the hamburger remains so accessible and popular. It adapts to the tastes and cultures of people everywhere – a true gastronomic chameleon.
