Hospitality sectorBusinesses happy to fall back on 'useless' rapid tests to stay open

RTL Today
Since Saturday, Luxembourg's hospitality sector has to deal with a new set of coronavirus measures, including the 2G+ system for guests, as well as closing early at 11pm.

This means that people who have yet to receive a third booster shot will still have to take a rapid test before entering a bar or restaurant. Our colleagues from RTL spoke to people on the ground about the challenges of the implementation.

François Koepp, Horesca’s secretary general, commented: “It’s not the first time we have to deal with the eleven o’clock closure, which is not ideal and does not make a lot of sense. We would have preferred to stay open until midnight.”

Restaurateur Mil Calmes criticised the reintroduction of rapid tests: “Most people complained about not yet having had the chance to get the booster jab, even though they are more than willing to take it.”

Koepp also expressed surprise over the fact that the rapid antigen tests are to be used again: “Last year in November, we were told that the tests are useless, and now we have to use them again throughout the entire sector. This means that we are playing Large Scale Testing for the entire country, which we are more than willing to do as long as we can stay open.”

Naturally, the implementation of the new system has also brought about a number of problems. For instance, the government’s CovidCheck system had not been updated in time on Monday, which meant that businesses were not able to check their clients for their 2G+ status. However, the app was updated in the meantime.
