It looks like a tornado, but it isn’t one. The meteorological phenomenon filmed on Tuesday afternoon is called a “dust devil”, meteorologist Luca Mathias explained.
“Such a whirlwind has limited power, so it is not very dangerous.” Unlike an actual tornado, a dust devil is not connected to a cloud.
As the video shows, the whirlwind merely managed to lift up some dust and straw. No damage was reported in the area.
The phenomenon occurs on a “very dry and heated surface”, when the weather is hot and there is little wind, according to Mathias. The conditions over the next few days should be ideal for a few more of these!
