VENEZUELA REACTION – The Luxembourg government says it is closely monitoring Venezuela’s political crisis and backing EU calls for a calm and peaceful resolution. The Foreign Ministry reports that 20 Luxembourgers are registered in the country, none requiring assistance so far.

YELLOW ALERT – A yellow weather warning is in effect until 10am this morning. Meteolux issued the ‘cold weather advisory’ for the entire country yesterday, for a freezing night and cold morning with a risk of ice.

TEST WARNING – The national warning system will be tested this morning. From 11am onwards, test text messages will be sent out to all mobile phones nationwide.

World

VENEZUELA CRISIS – President Trump insisted yesterday that the United States is “in charge” of Venezuela after Nicolas Maduro’s seizure and says he is dealing with the new leadership in Caracas. Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez says she is willing to cooperate with the US. Meanwhile Maduro faces narcotrafficking charges in a New York court later today.

TRUMP GREENLAND – President Trump has renewed claims that the USA needs Greenland for national security, prompting sharp rebukes from Denmark and Nordic allies. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and that the US government should stop its threats against a historic ally.

SWITZERLAND FIRE – Switzerland will hold a national day of mourning on Friday for the 40 victims of the fire disaster in the ski resort of Crans-Montana. Authorities say all victims have now been identified, including 20 minors. Over 100 people were injured, including one Luxembourger. Prosecutors are now investigating the two bar managers under criminal law. They are accused of involuntary homicide and involuntary injuries, as well as arson without intent.

UKRAINE WAR – At least two civilians have been killed in fresh Russian drone attacks on the Kyiv region. Russia meanwhile reports intercepting two dozen Ukrainian drones near Moscow, briefly disrupting air traffic.

EVA SCHLOSS RIP – Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss has died aged 96. The step-sister of Anne Frank and honorary president of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation has been praised by King Charles as a tireless champion against hatred and prejudice.

Sport

ATHLETICS – Luxembourg’s Vera Bertemes-Hoffmann has set a new national record over 10km, clocking 33 minutes and 37 seconds at the Prom’ Classic in Nice, improving her previous mark by nine seconds.

DARTS – Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler has stormed to his second consecutive world darts title, thrashing Dutchman Gian van Veen 7-1 at Alexandra Palace to claim a record £1 million in prize money.

BOXING – Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has broken his silence following a fatal car crash in Nigeria that killed two members of his training team. He posted two images on Instagram on Sunday, sitting alongside his mother and three other women, one of whom clutched a photograph of Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach. The boxer sustained minor injuries in last Monday’s collision.

Weather

Beware the potential of freezing fog this morning. While the fog will clear up and conditions will be dry to start with, from the afternoon onwards snow showers will move in from the northwest again, with a risk of ice. The cold temperatures will also result in persistent frost throughout the day. Temperatures start off very cold at -8 to -6°C this morning, rising to a maximum of -2°C in the afternoon.
