Storm Sabine/Ciara continues to batter Luxembourg and though there are no serious injuries reported, damage continues to be done and the public is encouraged to remain vigilant.

There have been reports of a number of fallen tree on Sunday night, the authorities reported around 180 interventions over the course of Sunday night and Monday morning as well as the closure of 13 sections of road across the country (see list below). Following the Minister of the Interior’s emergency meetings, new figures on emergency call-outs have been provided. The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps was called out around 180 times so far during the storm, with teams from 52 different fire brigades attending to incidents.

All in all, the fallout has been limited to material damage. Broadly, emergency services responded to situations of trees falling over, with three incidents concerning trees falling on cars. The authorities also report that a tree fell on the tram near the University and Coque sports centre at 5 am. The incident caused minor material damage, and the tram has begun operating as normal again.

Red AlertAs of Sunday afternoon, CGDIS has dealt with 1,461 calls to the emergency line. Residents have also been warned that wind gusts will increase over the course of Monday morning and that they should be cautious. Come 9 am, the alert will be downgraded to an orange alert, which will still involve heavy winds.

Shortly before 6am, RTL has learned that Luxair was cancelling all of its flights until 10am due to unprecedented and unsafe winds at Findel.

Classes are also cancelled in a large majority of schools across the country.

The water levels in Luxembourg’s streams and rivers are also increasing.

Residents are advised to stay home or only leave their homes if necessary. For all emergencies, contact 112. However, only contact the emergency services in the event of true emergencies.

Until 9 pm on Sunday, there were 215 responses to emergencies, mainly due to fallen trees. CGDIS colonel and operations management centre coordinator Tom Barnig told RTL that no specific region was especially affected.
