Historic dayFootage from 1944 shows arrival of American soldiers and liberation of Luxembourg

RTL Today
When the first American soldiers arrived in Petange on 9 September 1944, Luxembourg breathed a collective sigh of relief. Let this archive footage give you an impression of the historic days that saw the German occupation gradually come to an end in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg City was liberated the following day. Although the 10 September 1944 was the day the city was liberated, the war wasn’t over for the whole of the Grand-Duchy – including the North and areas in the East, which were heavily affected during the Battle of the Bulge.

Last Tuesday, the government and city council organised various commemoration ceremonies to pay tribute to those who suffered under the Nazi regime in the Grand Duchy and beyond.
