The Luxembourg state spent €2.88 million on air travel for ministers and civil servants in 2024, according to figures provided by Prime Minister Luc Frieden in response to a parliamentary question from Pirate Party MP Marc Goergen.
As might be expected, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs incurred the highest costs, at approximately €1.28 million. It is also the only ministry for which first-class tickets are occasionally booked, amounting to €37,000 last year. Overall, the ministry booked around 560 tickets in 2024, with nearly equal numbers in economy (280) and business class (275).
The Ministry of Finance recorded the second-highest travel expenditure at roughly €350,000, followed by the Ministry of the Economy at €300,000.
The data also included costs for charter flights from previous years. One notable expense was a €100,000 flight for former Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn in March 2019 for a trip to Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan. Another was a €47,000 charter in August 2019 to urgently return then-Minister of Home Affairs Taina Bofferding from Fuerteventura following a tornado in southwestern Luxembourg.
