Summer is firmly on the horizon and so begins the annual task of planning activities to keep our kids occupied. Pique their interest with our 2024 guide.
Luxembourg is irrefutably family-friendly. We have an abundance of stunning, natural landscape for outdoor adventures with the kids. Not to mention water parks and swimming pools, indoor/outdoor climbing, child friendly museums, indoor playgrounds, treetop adventure parks, outdoor playgrounds and more. All come in useful when filling part of the summer void as a family and with visitors.
The benefits of summer camps are widely recognised, not least to foster emotional intelligence, build self-confidence and independence, enhance communication and social skills — while children have fun making new friends. As stated by UNICEF; "Whether sport-based, art-based, education-based or any other kind of camp, encouraging children to try new things, make friends, and push themselves socially and physically gives children lifelong memories and vital skills."
With options across sport, the creative arts, STEM, languages and much more, there should be something to spark interest for everyone. While some children may miss out on account of the always finite number of places available, or in light of particularly niche interests, there is still a range of summer camps covering many bases in Luxembourg.
Schools out for Summer
Despite the annual mass exodus that occurs as soon as summer term ends, many families remain in the Grand Duchy seeking kids' activities for at least part of the school holidays or, in some cases, all of it.
Parents with very young children enrolled in a private crèche benefit from these remaining open during summer. Those using public daycare centres or public nurseries are not so lucky, as these facilities generally close — although some remain open. Often children over the age of 3 can access the local Maison Relais during this time, but places are limited. Summer camps are usually available from age 3+, so for younger ones, keep an eye on our ‘Whats on for Families’ section for more age appropriate events and activities for the whole family throughout the summer.
Maison Relais provision during school holidays is not open to everyone. For children enrolled in school outside the local public system, childcare can be particularly challenging. When parents work full-time it can be even more of a headache. See our article on after-school options for more info on Maison Relais. Many parents who do have an 'MR' place for their child also prefer to find other activities to fill at least part of the summer. Thus, demand for camps can be high.
In some communes, 'MR' will close during the first two weeks in August. Others remain open for the duration, only closing on 15 August, a public holiday. In Luxembourg City, 'MR' will be unavailable every afternoon for the first four weeks of the public school summer holidays. This is applicable to children in cycle 1.2 upwards, running from 22nd July - 22nd August inclusive. State sponsored activities are offered during these times, instead — such as Aktioun Bambesch. See our article for more details here.
Camp Collective
The 'camp planning' season has just begun and there are bound to be any number of new camps, making this not an entirely exhaustive list (although we've certainly tried!) For camps yet to be confirmed, check respective websites and social media, or even join mailing lists where possible. For booking and further information, it's always best to contact providers directly.
Some camps are already operating a waiting list, but many have places available and several others are yet to be confirmed. Camps can offer various attendance options, Colonie camps include at least one overnight stay, some camps provide extended hours for early drop off and late pick up, while others provide lunch and snacks — and others do so for an additional fee. Hopefully whatever you are seeking, our guide offers some clarity and pointers as you put together a fun and positive plan for the summer.
