In Luxembourg there's a place for every child interested in scouts, a movement dedicated to teaching kids to be decent, contributing members of society.

The Scout Movement is a worldwide youth social movement employing the Scout method, a programme of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities. Founded in 1907, the movement today has over 36 million members.

Here in Luxembourg there are plenty of options for children to become involved in scouts depending on language, whether you want an all-girl or mixed group — or whether you want a non-secular group or one with a religious affiliation.

There are two local guide and scout associations with options in English, French, and Luxembourgish

FNEL (National Federation of Luxembourg scouts)

Hereditary Grand-Duke Guillaume is a member of this association and is the Chief Scout of Luxembourg! There are branches located all over the country and different groups depending on age.

Within FNEL there is an English-speaking unit called Telstar as well as a French-speaking Robert Schuman unit.

LGS (The Luxembourg Guide and Scout Association)

This is the largest educational Youth Movement in Luxembourg. As with FNEL, there are branches all over the country, even in the far north, with different groups depending on age.

Benefits of joining the local scouts

For non-Luxembourgish children in the local schools this is a great opportunity to have more exposure to the language in a more social, non-academic setting with kids from their neighborhood — and not necessarily just from their school.

If your child has only limited capability in the Luxembourgish language don’t worry, the local group leaders are often older teenagers, and their multilingualism will ensure no child is left in the dark!

Religiously-affiliated (French and Italian-speaking) scouts

There is also a Catholic scout association (Parish of St. Joseph in Limpertsberg): Europa Scouten vu Lëtzebuerg (members of the International Union of European Guides and Scouts). Activities are generally conducted in French but there are also two Italian-speaking units within the wolf clubs.

English-speaking girl scout options

Following the closure of all British Girlguiding Overseas programmes on 1 September 2023 — after 100+ years of operation — English-speaking girl scouts in Luxembourg have successfully integrated into two multi-level USA Overseas Girl Scout troops.

One works exclusively with ISL students on Thursdays (as part of their after-school program), while another meets the last Sunday of each month and is open to all English-speaking girls aged 5-18. You can find details on the open programme here.

As you can see there is a place for every child interested in being a scout here in Luxembourg!
