SINGLES
Madison Beer, Spinnin’
With a voice reminiscent of many an old school singer, Madison Beer delivers a hypnotic and occasionally surprising piece of melancholic pop. Peppered with subtle production flourishes, it’s the simplicity of the song - and the range of Madison’s voice - which holds everything together here. Definitely more than the sum of its parts. Check out “Spinnin’”, available now from Epic Records.
Teleman, String Theory
London’s Teleman have come a long way since their Pete & The Pirates origins, firmly establishing themselves over the last decade as one of England’s finest indie pop outfits. Here, Tom Sanders brings his familiar down-to-earth lyrical quips to a spaced-out yet lighthearted three minutes of pop playfulness; utilising sounds reminiscent of their earlier works. For old fans and new, alike. “String Theory” is available now on Moshi Moshi Records.
The Chemical Brothers feat. Beck, Skipping Like A Stone
In anticipation of their upcoming album, ’For That Beautiful Feeling’, The Chemical Brothers have dropped a 2nd track featuring none other than that man of many talents, Beck. Unlike their previous collaboration - 2016’s "Wide Open" - "Skipping Like A Stone" begins with an almost Gary Numan-esque vocal from Mr Hansen before rising and flowering into a more typical Chemical Brothers banger. Undoubtedly destined for many a remix, check out "Skipping Like A Stone". Now available from EMI & Virgin Records.
ALBUMS
Osees, Intercepted Message
Often known as Thee Oh Sees, The OCS or any other combination of Orange County abbreviations you can imagine, John Dwyer and his Californian compatriots are back with their 27th (!) album of joyous, post-punk fun and weirdness. Ferocious live but always with tongue firmly in-cheek, Osees return with 12 playful tracks stuffed with the sort of guitars, synths and double-drummer setup they’re now so famous for. Firmly stepping away from the textural experimentations of previous albums such as ’A Weird Exits’ and ’An Odd Entrances’, and beyond the full on skin-removing riffs of ’Smote Reverser’ and ’Face Stabber’, ’Intercepted Message’ keeps things simple and groovy but 100% Osees. Available now from In The Red Records, check out lead track "Stunner" to get a full face of the funky flavour of Osees.
DJ Shadow, ‘Action Adventure’
Seven albums in and it’s becoming increasingly hard to expect Joshua Davis to scale the critically acclaimed heights of his first two albums. His subsequent releases have been somewhat mixed in quality, often being uncharacteristically indulgent. So, is his new release ‘Action Adventure’ a case of best foot forward, or is it high noon for the man they call DJ Shadow? Well, why not have a listen to lead track “Ozone Scraper” and decide for yourself. This one just dropped on Mass Appeal Records.
††† (Crosses), ‘Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete.’
Deftones singer Chino Moreno has been keeping his side project Crosses on a low heat for almost a decade now, with only a single album and a handful of EPs to show for that time (most being indie or self-funded releases). But now, with ‘Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete.’, Chino and cohort Shaun Lopez turn up the heat and drop their first album on a major label. There’s still everything from the expected electro rock, ambient, gothic rock, trip hop, and dark wave influences in there, but that bigger budget allows for a smarter production and an appearance from Robert Smith to add further endorsement. It’s a wild ride but there’s nowt wrong with that. ‘Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete.’ will release on Warner Records on October 13th. In the meantime, get a taste of the fresh lead single “Invisible Hand”.
