Quarantine life has taken its toll on artists, but some manage to pick up the isolation pieces and transform them into a flourishing project. That was the case this week with folk singer-songwriter Daniel Balthasar.

With a post on social media he surprised his fans on Friday about his upcoming release, an album titled The Long Lost Art Of Getting Lost. The accompanying text: “I wrote, recorded and mixed 10 songs inside a big cardboard box during quarantine. One song per day.” It was released this morning.

Balthasar explains the songs remain unfinished and unpolished, but they are beautifully pieced together, layered with guitars, atmospheric vocals and the occasional percussion pattern.

The album has a sincere depth to it, and it’s unimaginable to think each song was written, arranged and mixed in a mere few hours - all out of a cardboard box. His songwriting is pure and honest, a feeling that can be lost in over-produced releases. A true joy to listen to, and a must-have for when the vinyl comes out.

You can listen to and download the full album on his website.
