Switzerland overpowered Luxembourg with a 3-1 win in St Gallen on Tuesday, scoring three first-half goals to hand the Red Lions a sobering end to their international break.
Switzerland cruised to a 3-1 victory over Luxembourg in St Gallen on Tuesday night, scoring all three goals in the first half and leaving the visitors with no way back. Luxembourg's only response came from a late penalty converted by Danel Sinani in the 89th minute.
The Swiss side struck early through Ruben Vargas in the 9th minute and doubled their lead just three minutes later with a penalty from Breel Embolo following a foul by Enes Korac. A deflected shot credited to Muheim made it 3-0 in the 29th minute, effectively sealing the result before halftime.
Luxembourg struggled to create chances throughout the match, with Martins firing just wide early on and Korac seeing a header saved in the first half. Despite a better defensive showing after the break, the Red Lions never looked likely to mount a comeback.
Their only breakthrough came in the dying minutes when Sinani converted a spot kick after a foul on Curci. Substitute Rodrigues also suffered an injury shortly after coming on, adding to Luxembourg's woes.
The defeat follows a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Sweden and closes out this round of international fixtures for Luxembourg on a disappointing note.
