Luxembourg swimmer Rémi Fabiani delivering an outstanding performance in the 50m backstroke heats at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris.
Fabiani won his heat with a time of 24.73 seconds, breaking his own Luxembourg national record by 0.56 seconds and qualifying for the evening's semi-finals. Out of a field of 72 competitors, he posted the 13th fastest time overall. Earlier, Fabiani had already set a new national record for the 100m freestyle.
The semi-finals for the 50m backstroke will take place at 7pm on Thursday, 13 August.
Emma Barthel also made headlines by setting a new Luxembourg women's record in the 200m breaststroke heats. She finished in two minutes, 33.93 seconds, shaving 0.65 seconds off her previous national best.
However, Barthel did not advance to the semi-finals, ranking 23rd out of 23 swimmers.
Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri competed in the 200m freestyle, finishing seventh in his heat with a time of one minute, 47.98 seconds. He fell just 0.8 seconds short of a semi-final spot, placing 34th among 84 participants.
Daleiden Ciuferri narrowly missed on improving his own national record by just 0.24 seconds.
The Luxembourg men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, comprising Daleiden Ciuferri, Fabiani, Finn Kemp, and Florian Frippiat, set a new national record with a time of three minutes, 17.32 seconds, beating the previous best of three minutes, 20.07 seconds.
Despite the achievement, the team missed out on a spot in the final, finishing 15th out of 18. Notably, Fabiani’s split of 48.37 seconds was also faster than his previous national record from the individual heats.
The morning concluded with Lou Jominet, who finished second in her 1,500m freestyle heat with a time of 17 minutes, four seconds, 0.69 seconds. Despite her strong swim, Jominet did not advance to the next round.
