The Luxembourg City mayor recently commented on the ongoing constructions on Luxembourg's new football and rugby stadium in Cloche d'Or.

Luxembourg City will become home to the new national stadium, which is why all construction work is regulated via the mayor's office. The country's football community stands in great anticipation ahead of the first game, which can hopefully be played in March. Mayor Polfer commented: "Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee the date at this point. As you probably know, the health crisis has created a fair share of problems for the ongoing construction, with international firms no longer able to operate in the Grand Duchy without quarantining their work forces."

Polfer further explained that the stadium may look ready from the outside, but that a number of things still needed to be installed, such as guard rails: "When that process is done, we still have to undergo all safety tests and conduct a large-scale evacuation procedure."

FIFA World Cup qualifiers

Next Monday, the qualifying groups for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be drawn at the FIFA HQ in Zurich. The Luxembourgish national team has been placed in pot 4 out of 6, meaning that they could potential face 2 weaker teams, while also having to play against major countries, such as Germany, France, or England.

These encounters could be worthy inaugural games for the new stadium, national coach Lux Holtz believes: "Considering how far the construction has progressed, I think it should be possible to make the move in March."

Before the first official encounter can be played on the new pitch, 2 test games need to be performed.
