
FRAUD TRIAL – A trial opens today in Luxembourg City court over the death of a man whose body was found in a forest near Remerschen on Christmas Day four years ago. His cousin is charged with fraud and desecrating the corpse after allegedly collecting the victim’s pension following his death. The autopsy found that the man died of natural causes and the body was then deposited in the forest.
WORK ACCIDENT – A worker at a company in the Gadderscheier industrial zone in Soleuvre, was involved in a serious onsite accident on Tuesday, when they became trapped in a machine, sustaining critical injuries to their lower body. First aid was administered to the victim at the scene, before transportation to a hospital, where their condition is said to be life-threatening.

US TANKER – The US has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic after pursuing it from off the coast of Venezuela, in an operation bound to ratchet up tensions with Moscow. Washington says the tanker is part of a so-called shadow fleet that carries oil for countries such as Venezuela, Russia and Iran in violation of US sanctions, and seized it despite the ship being escorted by the Russian navy.”
US GREENLAND – The White House says President Trump is actively considering an offer to buy Greenland, despite Denmark and the island’s government insisting it is not for sale. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet Danish officials next week.
COLD SNAP – A cold snap continues across much of Europe, bringing snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures, with weather alerts and travel disruption in several countries. In the UK, Storm Goretti, the first named storm of the year, is expected today. In France, heavy snowfall and freezing rain persist, with 38 departments under orange alert for snow and black ice, according to Météo-France.
EU / SOUTH AMERICA TRADE DEAL – The EU is expected to approve the Mercosur free trade agreement with South America tomorrow after opposition from France, Italy, Poland, and Hungary was overcome with promises of increased farm subsidies. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Paraguay on Monday to sign the deal.
CRICKET – Australia have won the final Ashes Test against England by five wickets today to seal a 4-1 victory after a gruelling series.
FOOTBALL – In the English Premier League yesterday, the bulk of the 21st matchday fixtures took place. Manchester City drew 1-1 with Brighton. Burnley and Manchester United finished 2-2. Fulham won 2-1 against Chelsea. In the evening, Liverpool is playing against leaders Arsenal.
And in Portugal, Benfica Lisbon lost the League Cup semifinal 1-3 at home yesterday against Braga. Luxembourgish player Leandro Barreiro played the whole match. Braga will face Guimaraes in the final on Saturday.
SHOW JUMPING – Roeser’s popular Päerdsdeeg equestrian event has been cancelled for 2026, with organizers and the local council announcing the competition will return in 2027. Further details on the decision will be released on Monday.
