Luxembourg and Guatemala yesterday signed a deal to expand cooperation between the two countries.

Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez visited Luxembourg on Tuesday to strengthen bilateral relations on the political and economic fronts, as well as in the field of development cooperation between the two countries.

The two ministers signed a cooperation agreement between Guatemala and Luxembourg, setting out an institutional, legal and financial framework for launching new projects and opening up opportunities between the two nations. Luxembourg is also considering joint accreditation for Guatemala via its embassy in Costa Rica, in order to develop its ties with Central America in a regional setting.

Beyond that, Martínez and Bettel discussed current regional and international affairs. They voiced their commitment to multilateralism, a strong United Nations and the protection of human rights, as well as a shared dedication to peace and respect for international law. Bettel also reaffirmed his support for Guatemala's efforts to bolster democracy and the independence of its judiciary, while welcoming recent progress on both fronts.
