HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY – Today marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Ceremonies are being held worldwide to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Nazis. In Luxembourg, Prime Minister Luc Frieden is attending a ceremony at the Monument for Shoah victims in the capital. Labour Minister Marc Spautz joins commemorations in Esch-sur-Alzette at the site where the local synagogue was destroyed.

FATAL ACCIDENT – A fatal accident took place between Reckange and Brouch yesterday, when a motorist lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons. His car veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a car and a bus. Despite paramedics administering emergency treatment, the driver died of his injuries at the scene.

MISSING PERSON – Police are appealing for information after 15-year-old Noura Moreira Gomes was reported missing on Saturday, 24 January. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Moselle Valley police.

BABY FORMULA RECALL – According to an ALVA press release, three types of baby formula have been pulled from shelves over fears they could contain cereulide toxins, which can cause diarrhoea and vomiting if consumed. Gallia’s ‘Calisma Relais’ powder formula and two batches of Babybio Optima 1 formula have been found to potentially hold the harmful toxins.

World

HOSTAGE RETURN – Israeli forces have recovered the remains of Ran Gvili, the final hostage held in Gaza since Hamas’ October 2023 attack. His return paves the way for the next phase of US President’s Trump’s peace plan to get underway and enables a limited reopening of the Rafah crossing, a vital aid route into Gaza.

US ICE SHOOTING – The fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents at the weekend continues to spark protests and political fallout across the United States. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino is leaving Minneapolis as border czar Tom Homan takes over operations, marking a potential shift in the White House’s approach.

US WINTER STORM – The death toll from the winter storm battering the United States has risen to 23. Meanwhile, 600,000 homes remain without power as heavy snow destroys overhead lines. Temperatures are expected to drop below -40°C across some 20 states.

FRANCE SOCIAL MEDIA BAN – French lawmakers have approved a ban on social media for under-15s, with the bill passing 130 to 21. President Macron called it a major step to protect children from excessive screen time. The bill now moves to the Senate, ahead of becoming law.

EU-INDIA TRADE DEAL – Negotiations on a free trade agreement between India and the EU have concluded. The accord will be signed today in New Delhi by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The EU hopes to increase car and steel exports to India and India seeks greater access for textiles and pharmaceuticals. A defence and security agreement is also expected to be signed.

Sport

TENNIS – At the Australian Open, world number one Aryna Sabalenka has reached the semi-finals with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory over America’s Iva Jovic. Meanwhile,
Luxembourg’s Chris Rodesch won the final of the ATP tournament in Oeiras, Portugal, beating Hungary’s Zsombor Piros – who is 39 places higher – in three sets.

ATHLETICS Patrizia van der Weken emerged victorious from the 60-metre sprint at the Meeting de Paris Indoor athletics competition at the weekend, registering a time of 7.16 seconds.

FOOTBALL – In the English Premier League Everton and Leeds drew 1-1. In the Spanish league Girona and Getafe also drew 1-1. Meanwhile Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed the club are in talks to extend Harry Kane‘s deal at the club. The 32-year-old England forward, who joined Bayern in 2023, has a deal until 2027.

Weather

The morning gets off to a grey, foggy start, and it doesn’t improve much as the day goes on. Fog gives way to heavy cloud cover and showers through the afternoon, with sleet in northern areas of the country. Temperatures start off cold at 0–2°C in the morning, rising to a maximum of 2–4°C in the afternoon.
