Luxembourg
BODY FOUND – Luxembourg's rescue teams had been involved in a widespread search action along the Moselle river since Friday, after a swimmer went missing. According to German media, the 60-year-old man's body was discovered in the river on Sunday morning near the German town of Palzem. The man was quickly identified as the missing swimmer.
SCHENGEN BRIDGE – A lane in each direction on the Moselle bridge connecting Luxembourg and Germany will be closed for structural inspections, with authorities warning of possible traffic delays. According to Saarländischer Rundfunk, the Moselle bridge at Schengen will be partially closed from today onwards – for an indefinite period, following reports that cracks have been discovered in several locations on the bridge.
FIRST PAEDIATRIC NEUROSURGERY – Luxembourg's first ever paediatric neurosurgical operation took place on Friday at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL). The baby, aged just four months and suffered from craniosynostosis, a skull malformation in which one or more cranial sutures close prematurely, was successfully operated by Dr. Nathalie Gilis. A routine procedure in other countries, the surgery marked an important first for Luxembourg, as previously infants had to travel abroad for operations.
World
EU/US TRADE DEAL – The EU and United States have agreed a trade deal, with 15% tariffs for European exports to America. News of the deal, announced by Donald Trump and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday, followed US agreements last week, including with Japan, and comes ahead of a new round of China-US talks. Most stock markets have risen with the euro following the deal, which averts a potentially damaging trade war.
GERMANY TRAIN CRASH – At least three people have been killed when a regional train carrying about 100 passengers derailed in a wooded area in southwestern Germany on Sunday. German media is currently reporting around 50 injuries. Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
UN CONFERENCE – France and Saudi Arabia will lead the charge starting today to revive the push for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians at a UN conference in New York. French President Emmanuel Macron announced last week that he would formally recognize the State of Palestine in September. In an interview on Friday, foreign minister Xavier Bettel said that Luxembourg was now also leaning towards recognising the State of Palestine. Bettel is in New York, taking part in today’s conference.
GAZA AID – Meanwhile, Israel says it has resumed aid deliveries by air and opened humanitarian corridors amid mounting global criticism over access to food and medicine. Jordanian and Emirati planes dropped food into Gaza on Sunday, as Israel began a limited "tactical pause" in some military operations to allow the UN and aid agencies to tackle the hunger crisis.
GREECE WILDFIRES – Greece has requested EU help to battle wildfires that have sprung up in different regions, one of the worst just north of Athens destroying houses and forcing police to evacuate homes. The fires broke out nearly a week into a heatwave, in which temperatures have passed 45C.

FOOTBALL – England has retained their European title in dramatic fashion, edging Spain on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Chloe Kelly converted the decisive kick as England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to win the Women's Euro 2025.
CYCLING – Tadej Pogacar has celebrated his fourth triumph in cycling's most emblematic competition – the Tour de France – a gruelling 3,400 kilometre race in 21 days. Jonas Vingegaard ended second overall while breakout German star Florian Lipowitz took third on his debut.
FORMULA 1 – Oscar Piastri has won the Belgian Grand Prix for McLaren. It was Piastri's first win at the classic Spa-Francorchamps circuit and his sixth this season.
SWIMMING & ATHLETICS – In swimming Luxembourg swimmers have failed to qualify for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this year, but in athletics, Luxembourg's Victoria Rausch set a new national record in the 100-metre hurdles on Saturday evening with a time of 13.09 seconds, finishing third behind Poland's Klaudia Wojtunik (12.88 seconds) and Switzerland's Jil Sanchez (13.01 seconds).
