The position of European Council president is currently occupied by the Polish politician Donald Tusk. According to RTL sources, Bettel was suggested as a successor to Tusk.

The prime minister responded to RTL's question whether the rumour was true, saying that he had indeed been asked if he was interested in taking up a role in the European Union. He also revealed he had told his European colleagues that he was honoured by the suggestion, but felt he was not the appropriate candidate for the position.

Instead, he confirmed that he supports the current European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager in becoming the next European Commission president, but said that in the meantime, we should focus on the upcoming elections.

The proposal to make Bettel European Council president was suggested in the context of Vestager becoming the new European Commission president.
