Following Pétange accident'Urgent services': Do the police have special road privileges?

RTL Today
Two police patrol vehicles were recently involved in an accident while responding to an emergency call, prompting an investigation into the circumstances and raising questions about the traffic rules that apply to officers on urgent duty.

How did the accident happen?

On Sunday, an accident occurred as police officers were on their way to respond to an urgent call – a report of a burglary. Two police vehicles were involved in the crash, and three people had to be transported to hospital.

However, as the police press office told RTL, the incident did not interfere with the handling of the burglary case.

Do different traffic rules apply to police vehicles?

In general, the same traffic rules apply to everyone, including the police. However, there are exceptions when officers are responding to an emergency.

Under certain conditions, such as an urgent intervention to protect life, prevent injury, safeguard property, or ensure public safety, police vehicles are granted priority, even at red lights, intersections, or against traffic signs.

The Luxembourg Highway Code accordingly defines urgent service as “any movement in a vehicle that requires urgent intervention to save human lives, prevent physical harm to persons, safeguard property, ensure public safety and security, and maintain public order; movements in vehicles of the Grand Ducal Police used in protection, law enforcement, searching for offenders, as well as travel in customs vehicles used in the search for offenders, are considered urgent service.”

An investigation will determine the precise circumstances of the accident.

Specialised training

As part of their training, all police officers are required to complete specialised driving courses, which include exercises such as emergency manoeuvring and obstacle avoidance. According to the police press office, “Every officer who drives an emergency vehicle has therefore undergone appropriate training, which is also updated through regular refresher courses.”
