Mathieu van der Poel won the final stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg on Sunday. The Dutchman rode out in front on his own for the entire stage and crossed the finish line solo in the Limpertsberg district.
Davide Piganzoli secured the overall victory, successfully defending his lead on the final day ahead of Matteo Vercher (+52") and Thomas Gachignard (+54").
Arno Wallenborn was the best-placed Luxembourger, coming home 16th on the day, 1 minute and 23 seconds down on the winner.
Van der Poel went all in on the final stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg, breaking away solo straight after the start in Mersch.
Over the 177 kilometres between Mersch and Limpertsberg, he powered his way to a spectacular win, showing that he is in prime form heading into the World Championships in Montreal.
Even in the closing stages of the race, the Dutchman kept his lead above a minute, ceding no rider a realistic shot at a comeback. Mikkel Honoré and Pepijn Reinderink came home second and third, trailing by 1'04" and 1'09" respectively.
To top off his impressive display, Van der Poel picked up enough points during the stage to take both the best climber and best sprinter jerseys. The best young rider jersey went to the overall winner, Davide Piganzoli.
