Thomas Cook is not only the oldest holiday operator, but one of the largest worldwide. As a result, consequences of its demise are enormous for staff and customers alike. Almost 600,000 tourists have been stuck as a result, either in airports or hotels, and the future is uncertain to say the least for more than 21,000 employees.

For would-be holidaymakers, the most important help available is the so-called insolvency insurance, said travel agent Fernand Heinisch, a European directive designed to protect customers. However, this may not apply to everyone, as it only covers package holidays.

In Luxembourg the impact is expected to be small. The future is still uncertain for many affected by the company’s demise.
