Tim Pauly, a spokesperson for the police, revealed the statistics, stating that around 500 bikes were declared stolen in 2018 - almost double the figures from 2017, without taking into account the number of stolen bicycles which were not reported to police.

In 2018 the police were able to recover around 186 bicycles, but only 21 of these found their way back to their original owners. This is thought to be related to the amount of information provided to police, which is often not sufficient to help trace the stolen equipment.

The campaign, which launched last week, aims to encourage cyclists to keep a record of their bicycle's serial number, as well as taking photos and keeping any receipts in the event of theft.

Philippe Herkrath of the Luxembourg Cycle Initiative said it was important to always secure a bicycle when in public.

A strong bicycle lock can help, but some thieves have been known to use vans when carrying out a theft.

To combat this, Herkrath suggests always attaching a bicycle to a solid object, and the police also offer a free code engraving service to further help with identification.
