In an open letter, Philippe Wilmes describes himself as a political victim and compares his case to conditions in the Middle Ages. He speaks of “dark times” in which people were judged without a defence, sharply criticising what he sees as fundamental failures of due process in his case.
He particularly accuses Health Minister Martine Deprez of having suspended him without a fair procedure, going so far as to allege abuse of office and illegal actions. He also reproaches the Medical Council for failing to follow legal procedures.
Dr Wilmes appeals to the Prime Minister, saying he now bears responsibility for restoring confidence in the rule of law through a full and transparent clarification of the case. The affair, he argues, does not only harm him personally but also creates a “general suspicion” towards all doctors in the country.
In his letter, the doctor calls on Prime Minister Luc Frieden to overturn what he describes as the “scandalous decision” to suspend him, thereby reopening the path to a procedure that complies with the constitution.
