The new committee has announced that mental health issues, student transport, and the education reform will be among their top priorities. The representative student body hopes to incentivise politicians to pay more attention to the needs of pupils in the long run.
18-year-old Luc Dauphin, student at Lycée Arts et Métiers, was elected president of the committee. Luca Colling is to act as representative for final year students, which is a new position created as a response to the pandemic. Colling elaborated: “Many of our problems never reached the Ministry, which is why we wanted to create a direct link and improve communication.”
Dauphin explained that due to home schooling, pupils often struggle to follow the syllabus and prepare for exams: “We need to increase support for students so that they feel more at ease in their everyday lives. Pressure is really high at the moment.”
The student committee further believes that it is time for the education sector to modernise its ways. Last year, they launched a respective reform to change the teaching methods: “We need to get rid of front-of-class teaching since we have the necessary technology to actually live in the 21st century.”
Another issue is student transportation, which the committee believes to lack flexibility. Buses are only running at specific times, but senior students tend to stay longer in schools. One potential solution would be to adapt the schedules of public transport, which could help improve the everyday lives of pupils here in Luxembourg.
