The discovery was reported by Tageblatt on their site, and confirmed by the division of sanitary inspection in conjunction with the Museum of Natural History.

A single case of the Hyalomma tick was discovered in Dudelange. It is a bigger type of tick than the species currently found in Luxembourg. Hyalomma ticks can transmit a number of illnesses such as Crimean-Congo fever or spotted fever.

The Hyalomma is more likely to attack birds or other animals than humans, said Dr Alexander Weigand to Tageblatt.

Whether the specimen discovered in Dudelange is carrying any diseases is not yet confirmed. If anyone should come across a Hyalomma, the museum would be very interested in obtaining it, either alive, frozen, or in alcohol.
