Parliamentary questionsSince the end of October 2018, ministries received over 500 questions from MPs

RTL Today
How does an MP get information from a Minister? The typical method is via a "Question parlementaire" (parliamentary question).

533 QPs, as they are also called, is quite a large volume of requests when compared to other years.

In fact, there are 200 more questions so far put forward than during the first five months of the previous session, says President of the Chamber of Deputies Fernand Etgen. (video in Luxembourgish)

While the coalition agreement was only completed at the beginning of December and parliament could only start working properly at that stage, perhaps indicating why the trend has seen such an upswing.

Despite the relatively high figures, Etgen doesn't want to speak of a record: in the 2015-2016 session, there were 969 QPs.

Etgen doesn't consider the current intense activity as a negative aspect either: parliamentary questions are a right that every MP has and a means to hold the government accountable.

According to RTL sources, some ministers are being inundated by parliamentary questions and are overwhelmed, with a number simply unable to manage the quantity.

Part of the reason why this is the case may be put down to the fact that at this time there is an additional party in the Chamber of Deputies: the Pirates.

Having asked 60 parliamentary questions, MP for the Pirate party, Sven Clement, is the champion of QPs. Secondon the podium is MP for ADR, Fernand Kartheiser with 55 QPs.

Other MPs who has a lot of questions to ask are Martine Hansen, Mars di Bartolomeo, Marc Goergen, Laurent Mosar, André Bauler and Jeff Engelen.

Many times, an MP asks their parliamentary question in conjunction with another MP. Often the question is also directed at more than one ministry. Minister for Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, in particular, finds a lot of questions on his desk: he has received more than 80 since the commencement of this current session.
