EurostatNearly one in three babies delivered by Caesarean in Luxembourg

RTL Today
According to a Eurostat report, 30% of babies born in the Grand Duchy in 2017 were delivered by C section.

The figures for Luxembourg are slightly higher than the European average.

Dr. Pit Duschinger, president of the Luxembourg Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SLGO), defended the results in a discussion with L'essentiel. He explained due to there being just one neonatal ward in Luxembourg, at the Grande-Duchesse-Charlotte maternity hospital, other maternity departments across the country tended to minimise risks linked to childbirth by carrying out caesareans.

Last year, Minister of Health Etienne Schneider commented on the number of Caesarean sections in the Grand Duchy in 2016.

The reasons for C sections vary from complications in labour, to health issues associated with the mother. Duschinger also cited a number of patients who wished to schedule deliveries on medically reasonable dates.
