In May of this year, the National Language Institute will celebrate its 10-year anniversary. It was created after a 2009 law expanded the former "Language Centre" (Centre de Langues) and turned it into the institute we know today.

The language school has three branches across the country and about 130 teacher currently work at the National Language Institute (INL).

After the nationality act of 2017, the demand for taking the Luxembourgish language test went through the roof: From 1,300 to 2,000 applications.

Two different skill sets are tested in the exam: talking and listening. To get a Luxembourgish language certificate, students have to be at least at an A2 level in speaking and at B2 for comprehension and listening skills.

Jacqueline Messerich is a Luxembourgish professor at the INL and teaches her students (mainly adults) in the second year. Her target is to teach them to become at least semi-fluent in speaking Luxembourgish.

Progressively, her students are being introduced to the Luxembourgish vocabulary and are also taight about sentence structure. To build confidence in speaking, the course has a practical orientation.

Many of Messerich's students are looking to get a "Luxembourgish as a Foreign Language" certificate in order to apply for citizenship.

More than half of the students who took the exam last year got their certificate.
