Luxembourg's population grew by just 1.5% in 2024 – the slowest annual increase in a decade – reaching 681,973 residents by January 2025, according to new STATEC figures released Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) reported that Luxembourg’s population reached 681,973 as of 1 January 2025 – a 1.5% increase from the previous year. This marks the lowest annual growth rate in the past decade.

Over the last ten years, the country’s population grew by an average of 2% to 2.5% per year, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 when growth dipped to 1.4% and 1.7%, respectively, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The primary contributor to the increase remains immigration. In 2024, Luxembourg recorded 25,725 new arrivals against 16,444 departures, resulting in a net migration gain of 9,281 people.

The natural balance – the difference between births and deaths – stood at +1,988 in 2024. While 6,459 births represented a 2.2% rise from 2023, deaths also increased slightly to 4,471 (up 0.9%).

Women in Luxembourg lived an average of 85.3 years, compared to 81.2 years for men.
