A group of Luxembourg NGOs and non-profits has once again criticised the government’s national action plan against poverty, arguing that it excludes the poorest residents and disproportionately affects people under international protection.

The coalition acknowledged some positive aspects, including that Minister for Family Affairs Max Hahn presented the plan and that it would introduce administrative simplifications, greater harmonisation, and partial automation of social aid.

However, the NGOs criticised that there are still no reliable statistics on poverty in Luxembourg, and that the poorest members of society remain in extreme poverty despite existing aid. To combat child poverty, the group is calling for an increase in family allowances.

The organisations further argued that people under international protection are hit particularly hard, and that the government’s action plan does not sufficiently take their concerns into account.

The press release was signed by, among others, the Association for the Support of Immigrant Workers (ASTI), Médecins du Monde, Amnesty International, and Solidarity with Beggars. It concludes with the associations stating that their work is far from being done.
