On Monday, the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) gave a press conference where members expressed general support for the reduction of work hours, which they highlighted with the slogan ‘It is time for a fair working world’. However, they refrained from providing a detailed plan on how they intend to implement this reduction.
But, according to Minister of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy Georges Engel, the LSAP has launched a study on the advantages and disadvantages of the policy. The results of this study are expected in April this year.
One of the supposed advantages of the reduction is that it improves equality between women and men, allowing both to spend more time on their households.
The LSAP is further convinced that less work should not mean lower salaries. Maxime Miltgen, lead candidate for the LSAP’s Luxembourg City section, argued that the reduction will reduce employers’ expectations for overtime given that the overall rate of work is going down.
At the same time, the LSAP believes that raising the retirement age is out of the question.
