A teenage boy sustained life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital after being hit by a car in the early hours of Sunday, with the driver fleeing the scene.
The serious accident occurred at around 3.30am on the CR166, shortly before the entrance to Kayl.
Two teenagers were walking along the road when a car travelling from the direction of Schifflange struck one of them. Despite the violent collision, the driver continued towards Kayl without stopping.
The 16-year-old victim was taken directly to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, police reported on Sunday afternoon.
The road between Kayl and Schifflange had to be completely closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
According to initial police findings, the vehicle involved is believed to be a Hyundai i10, probably light green in colour. The car may also have damage on the passenger side.
Police issued an update on Sunday afternoon following their appeal for witnesses. A tip-off from a member of the public led to the identification of the suspected driver of the car involved in the hit-and-run.
Police located the man shortly afterwards and took him to the police station, where he was arrested on the orders of the public prosecutor's office. The suspected driver is due to appear before an investigating judge on Monday.
