Every year, the Schueberfouer draws crowds to the Glacis, signalling the start of Luxembourg's most beloved fair, and the largest of its kind in the Greater Region.
For locals, skipping the opening weekend is never an option. As the fair kicked off, the Glacis buzzed with excitement, with families, friends, and thrill-seekers gathering to enjoy the rides and festive atmosphere that have defined the event for generations.
RTL took to the fairgrounds on Saturday and found that the enthusiasm for the Schueberfouer remains undiminished this year. Both Luxembourg residents and visitors from neighbouring Belgium, France, and Germany flocked to the event in high spirits.
Many attendees spoke of the fair as an annual tradition. One visitor shared: "It's important, especially when the whole family comes together. It's a must, at least once a year." Another put it simply: "It's a tradition since we were kids.".
Cross-border guests also felt the draw. "We're from Libramont. We don't have a big festival like this at home, so we make the most of it", some visitors explained.
International guests, including a group of young Americans visiting the Grand Duchy, were quick to praise the local food and the festive spirit, finding it much nicer than fairs back home.
For many families, the fair provides a rare opportunity to reunite. One grandmother, surrounded by nearly fifteen relatives, called the gathering "wonderful", and smiled about "even spending a little money".
Indeed, an outing to Schueberfouer comes with a price tag, but much like a family holiday, it's something people plan for in advance.
Some joked around with Luxembourg's high costs: "We're in Luxembourg, just take out a loan!" But most prefer not to overthink the cost, even if the average spend is around €50 per person.
For their part, the American visitors took a relaxed approach: "When we have fun, we have fun." They concluded that while they might not go overboard, they will spend what they need to enjoy themselves.
Others saw the fair as a learning experience. One father, attending with his four children, saw the occasion as the perfect moment to teach some practical financial lessons. "It's part of their education, to explain that this is something special and, of course, you have to make choices".
No matter the budget, the Schueberfouer remains a cherished highlight for many and proves that festive joy is always worth setting aside a little extra for.
