Constitutional reformLarge majority in favour of new constitution

RTL Today
The vote and referendum for a new constitution need to be thoroughly discussed in order to avoid unpleasant surprises, according to the opposition in the parliamentary commission on institutions on Friday.

The coalition supporting a new constitution is significant, mainly because of the participation and support of opposition party CSV, which has so far been cooperating as previously agreed on.

According to Léon Gloden, ‘there are no issues with the current constitution law from CSV’s side’.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel agreed with Gloden when he says that the constitution is to be dealt with by the Parliament. Future meetings will focus on how to explain the constitutional text to the public.

LSAP MP Alex Bodry also supports a constitutional reform and explained that the majority for a new constitution even exceeds the current governmental majority.

In light of the CSV's support for a constitutional reform, the opposition in this matter is actually the smaller parties, namely the Pirate Party, the Left, and the ADR. The Pirate Party's Sven Clement was clear that the government must sufficiently prepare the reform and inform the public before they vote.

The Left MP Marc Baum pointed out that several discussions have already started, particularly regarding those communes that want to change constituency and district, which is to be one of the subjects that have to be considered as part of the constitution.
