Ad spaceHow much revenue is generated through advertisements?

RTL Today
Compared to two years ago, last year's advertising was on the rise, as concluded by a study by Nielsen.

The Nielsen company has analysed data given to them by advertisers. In total, there has been a 3.8% increase in revenue. Last year, €142 million was spent on commercial advertising.

Newspapers remain the most popular choice to publish commercial advertisements.

In the daily press, revenues from advertisements have risen from €49.3 million to €49.4 million, so numbers have remained relatively stable.

New trend

It appears that radio ads are becoming increasingly attractive: there has been a clear upward trend. There has been a 12% increase, which corresponds to an increase of €3 million, bringing the total amount spent on radio ads to €29.1 million.

In third place is the internet, which has made €14.2 million through commercial advertisement.

Market share

These developments also reflect the market share: the daily press remains the most popular advertising tool, counting 35% of the market share. Every fifth advertising slot is broadcast on the radio and 10% of ads are published online.

The biggest loser is television: in just over a year, it has lost 11% of advertising revenues. This amounts to a loss of €1.5 million and leaves television advertising with 9% of the market share.

Gross investments, which include financial, familial and official notices, small ads and so on, also saw a rise. From €155.5 million, ads climbed to €159.6 million - approximately a €4 million increase.

This can be explained by the emergence of two new platforms for advertisements: Tramedia with ads on trams and Imail News. Those two platforms alone, amount to 3 of the 4 million euro increase.

Cactus remain the most prolific advertisers, with the runner-up revealed as Post.

Compared to 2017, the podium positions have not changed. In third place comes Möbel Martin, which has climbed significantly from 6th place. Tango, Spuerkeess, and de Kichechef follow.

The economic sectors who spent the most on advertising are culture, tourism, leisure activities and sports, totalling €28.6 million.
