The annual influenza epidemic is underway in Luxembourg, with case numbers rising only slightly last week. Health authorities reported 639 confirmed cases, representing a 2% increase from the previous period. Children and adolescents remain the most affected demographic.

While the start of the Christmas school holidays may have slightly tempered transmission, the flu season remains active. The National Health Directorate reiterates that influenza vaccination is still available and recommends it as the most effective preventive measure, particularly for individuals over 65 who face the highest risk of severe complications.

The report also notes trends for other respiratory viruses. Diagnosed cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) rose by 8% last week, from 260 to 281 cases, with 71% of infections occurring in children under nine years old.

In contrast, officially reported cases of Covid-19 fell by 19% week-on-week. However, health officials note a concurrent increase in the virus’s concentration in wastewater, suggesting a potential gap between confirmed diagnoses and the actual level of community circulation.

To protect against influenza, Covid-19, RSV, and other seasonal illnesses, the Directorate underscores the importance of fundamental hygiene measures: thorough and frequent hand washing, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and maintaining distance from others, especially when experiencing symptoms.
