Definite statistics are yet to be published. The federation of Luxembourg's car dealers is currently conducting a survey among its members. The results are expected to be published at the end of February. Fedamo president Philippe Mersch nevertheless explained that certain trends were already emerging. Car brands that had already sold electric cars last year seem to have sold fewer electric cars this year.
Mersch added that a higher number of car dealers now offer electric cars, which might partly explain the apparent drop in sales. He also stressed that, in his eyes, it was overly optimistic to believe that 49% of Luxembourg's vehicle fleet will be electric by 2030. To achieve that goal, car dealers would have to sell more than double the amount of electric cars each year.
There was no point in rushing the transition and the increase of excise duties on fuel was premature, the president of the car dealer federation said. He concluded that consumers should be given the chance to adapt.
