This news has been confirmed by Minister for Culture Sam Tanson following an enquiry by Tageblatt.lu.
The necessary repairs would take too long and would not be completed by 2022. This means that Gebléishal cannot become the headquarter of the European Capital of Culture.
Together with Fonds Belval the search is now underway for a new building in Belval that can be used for Esch 2022.
The General Director of Esch 2022, Nancy Braun, had announced two months ago that she wanted to move the Esch 2022 offices from Differdange and 1535 into Gebléishal before the summer holidays.
Both the minister for culture and the mayor of Esch, Georges Mischo, backed the idea of using Gebléishal as the headquarter. This is however impossible due to safety concerns.
