In an interview with RTL on Friday, ADR parliamentary leader Fred Keup said the education minister had spoken untruths earlier this week when he attributed much of the misinformation around the unisex toilet debate to Keup’s party members.

Later on Friday afternoon, Claude Meisch spoke to RTL reporters in response to Keup’s claim, saying they should not behave like children accusing one another of lying. Meisch went on to say that Keup had omitted much of what was discussed in the parliamentary committee on the subject of introducing unisex toilets to schools. In particular, Meisch highlighted the whole project is an adaptable pilot project for 2032, and that each school would decide on their own what toilets would be introduced to new buildings.

In response to the debate unfolding among society, the Ministry of Education has already amended the pilot project to maintain toilets separated by gender, with the option to add additional neutral bathrooms if required. The wording is effectively somewhat different to that presented to the Chamber committee last week - in that version, there was still the option for a secondary school to only install unisex toilets, if that school decided that was what they wanted.
