Fuel habitsDiesel by far the preferred fuel of cross-border workers

Statec's latest figures on fuel sales reveal that cross-border workers by far prefer to use diesel when refilling in Luxembourg.

In 2018, nearly 887,000 cubic metres of diesel were sold at Luxembourg's borders, equating to 11,000 semi-trailers weighing 27 tonnes each filled to the brim.

In contrast, petrol does not represent even half of border sales in Luxembourg, despite experiencing better sales in 2018 than in the two preceding years. Only 281,457 cubic metres of petrol were sold in 2018.

Diesel has proven to be most popular at petrol stations near the border with France, which represents 368,378 cubic metres worth of sales. However, whilst German consumers also purchase a lot of diesel (293,962 cubic metres), petrol is becoming more and more popular (141,998 cubic metres).

Belgian cross-border workers also appear to conform to the overall trend, purchasing 224,327 cubic metres of diesel in 2018. This corresponds to an annual fuel consumption of 78% diesel and 22% petrol.

Of course, these figures are not limited to cross-border workers. They can apply to motorists passing through and, naturally, Luxembourgers living in the vicinity of the borders.

The trend in Luxembourg globally reveals that 81% of fuels purchased in Luxembourg is diesel, showing that, despite increased fuel excises, diesel is far from dead in the Grand Duchy.
