Torrential rain and flooding that hit Luxembourg on Monday 8 September have left a trail of destruction with insurers releasing their first assessment.
Hundreds of claims are already in progress, with insured losses of at least €8 million, according to the Association of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (ACA). To date, more than 1,000 claims have been lodged – around 85% for homes and 15% for vehicles – and insurers expect further cases in the coming days.
The administrative process began immediately after the floods. ‘On the very first day, several hundred compensation claims were registered,’ the ACA said, cautioning that the total is likely to rise as assessments continue.
The scale of damage reflects the record rainfall earlier this week. MeteoLux reported 126.7 l/m² in 24 hours at Findel – nearly twice the September monthly average – breaking daily and 12-hour records since measurements began in 1947. The ACA described the event’s intensity as unprecedented, which helps explain the breadth of losses.
