Former Vicar General Mathias Schiltz, a leading figure of the Luxembourg Church and long-time chairman of the St. Paul Group, passed away in Luxembourg City at the age of 92.
With the death of Mathias Schiltz, the Luxembourg Church has lost one of its most distinguished figures.
The family confirmed that Mathias Schiltz passed away during the night of Monday to Tuesday. The long-serving vicar general died in Luxembourg City at the age of 92. A trained theologian, he held this position within the Archdiocese for more than three decades, retiring in 2011. Between 1976 and 2012, he also served as Titular Canon of the Cathedral.
Born on 1 May in Luxembourg City, where he spent his childhood in the Gare district, Schiltz was ordained as a priest in 1958 by Bishop Léon Lommel after studying at the seminary. During the transformative years of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, he continued his studies in Canon Law and Liturgy in Paris.
Alongside André Heiderscheid, Mathias Schiltz also played a defining role in Luxembourg's media landscape. From 1987 to 2012, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the St. Paul Group, which at the time published the Luxemburger Wort.
One of the highlights of his career was his involvement, together with Mil Majerus, in organising Pope John Paul II's visit to Luxembourg in 1985.
Even in later life, Mathias Schiltz continued to write and publish theological opinion pieces, particularly reflecting on social cohesion.
