In collaboration with the Centre for Ecological Learning Luxembourg (CELL), the Water Management Authority has launched a new campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of water conservation and quality.

While everyone knows water is vital for our survival, it is easy to take its value for granted. The moment you turn on the tap, water flows effortlessly. A simple, everyday action that may water down just how precious this resource truly is.

Water concerns everyone, regardless of age or background. The idea for the Water Management Authority's new campaign “We Are Water” emerged as part of the fourth Water Management Plan, set to be finalised by the end of 2027. The plan aims to analyse the condition of surface water in the Grand Duchy and take the necessary measures to improve them. These analyses are conducted every six years.

“The last management plan, from 2021, included a thorough analysis,” explains Anne-Marie Reckinger, Deputy Director of the Water Management Authority. She continued: “There we could see that our water, due to various pressures they face, are not in the best of conditions.”

“Pressures” stem not only from industry and agriculture, but also from everyday household wastewater produced by residents. Fortunately, there are many simple changes and steps individuals can take to mitigate harm to our supply.

“For example, avoid using pesticides at home for weed control. Also, check the products you use in the shower to see if they contain microplastics. If a product contains microplastics, you can make an informed decision to choose an alternative next time you shop,” Reckinger advises.

Maintaining stable and good water quality requires cooperation not only from citizens, but also from numerous stakeholders working alongside the Water Management Authority. The “We Are Water” campaign is just one part of a broader set of actions that need to be undertaken.

Despite the challenges above, residents should remain confident about consuming Luxembourg's drinking water, which is safe for consumption.
