Marking a new phase in its fleet expansion, CFL has launched its first "coupled" Coradia train, a 164-metre-long unit that doubles passenger capacity on its route.

The Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) is continuing the rollout of its new Coradia Stream High Capacity train fleet, a key initiative to dramatically increase passenger capacity across the network.

To date, 14 of the 34 new trains are already in service, with the company recently achieving a new milestone by operating its first "coupled" train, forming a single unit 164 metres long.

The new fleet, described by CFL Director General Marc Wengler as "the largest order ever placed by CFL," was built by the French manufacturer Alstom in Barcelona. Once fully deployed by the end of 2026, it is projected to increase the total number of seats on the network by 46%.

The first two trains entered service a year ago, each featuring 334 seats. The recent advancement involves coupling two of these units together. On Wednesday morning, the first such double-set began service on the Luxembourg City – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy line, effectively doubling the capacity to 668 seats on the route.

In a press release, CFL credited the "hard work from the CFL teams" for preparing and implementing this new coupled configuration.

The next major milestone is scheduled for the end of 2025, with the planned introduction of the first six-carriage Coradia trains from the 2450-series. These longer formations will provide 692 seats per train, further expanding capacity as the fleet modernisation continues.
